The Clash

Clash of the Choirs has been an interesting week thus far. Its something Id like to see again, but done a little differently next time.

Nick and Patti were the only two that held the auditions correctly. Listened to everyone, took notes, THEN chose the twenty. Not pick and choose as you go along. For all you know, once youve chosen everyone, the GREAT onces could have been the next person in line.

Though I had been splitting my votes fairly evenly among Nick and Blake, I wanted Nick to win. Then Blakes choir did that incredible perfermance of "Joy to the World" last night.
I was floored. THATS what a choir is supposed to sound like. There has been way to much emphasis on soloist and choreography so far. That performance proved that you can do awesome by simply standing there and not moving...much. Also, up til that point, there really wasnt that much harmonizing with, say, alto's doing one thing, tenors doing something else, and soprano's have their descant. It was so good to hear that.

Dont misunderstand me. Patti's choir is awesome, and she has some amazing talent in her ranks. The solo's have been incredible.

Which, unfortunately, is the problem. The show is Clash of the Choirs. With Patti's soloist belting out the melody, its almost impossible to make out the rest of the chorus, other than an occasional "echo" line.

So, yeah. I will be disappointed if Team LaBelle wins.

What I would like to see next time (if there is one) is more themed stuff. They get a "pop" arrangement like theyve been favoring, something traditional (Id like to see them pull off something from Handles "Messiah". Amen Chorus, perhaps?), and maybe a choral broadway piece.

Lot of interesting things to do here. Just cut back on the solo's.
